Sophisticated Web of Attacks: Understanding the Cohesive eCrime Adversary Universe

20 Oct 2022
Level 3, Room GW2 | Sands Expo and Convention Centre
Darkweb: Ducking Cybercrime

Traditional thinking about cyber criminal activity is single groups perpetrate crimes in a vacuum, performing all aspects of their operations by themselves. This may have been true in the not-too-distance past, but it could not be further from the truth with modern cyber criminal activity. Today there is a sophisticated web of criminals operating as a microcosm of the real world. Adversaries have specialised, offering services for sale to other criminals, much like how real-world providers offer services to legitimate businesses. This presentation focuses on how ecrime has evolved into a multi-faceted web of criminal enterprises. Cutting-edge capabilities are leveraged by adversaries for every aspect of an attack. The talk will focus on the eCrime Adversary Universe complexity, how these adversaries are intertwined, and what organisations need to focus on to create a safe and sustainable cyberspace by decreasing the risk of successful cyber criminal activity attempting to disrupt their operations.
