SMRs and Cybersecurity

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are reshaping the cybersecurity landscape of the nuclear industry. Designed for faster deployment and lower operational costs, SMRs will rely heavily on modular miniaturized components, remote operations, autonomous systems, and AI/ML technologies. While this reduces the need for on-site personnel, it significantly expands the potential cyber risks in powerplant OT systems. This coming integration of new IT-based services into traditionally isolated OT environments challenges to existing nuclear industry paradigms. The OT environment in the nuclear industry has the same approach and challenges as it is across all OT industries, it's just tailored based on specific operational needs.

This session will introduce the world of SMRs and cybersecurity, challenges and key points for assessing cybersecurity capabilities. Session also shares ideas and best practices that can be applied to strengthen OT cybersecurity across other critical infrastructure sectors.
